St. Michael and Angelic Intercessions

Biblical Defense of Praying to St. Michael the Archangel and the Holy Angels

(My apologies for creating the initial draft of this post with a lot of mistakes last Saturday midnight as I was about to go to bed already to wake up earlier to make it to Sunday Holy Mass early the following morning... Nevertheless, I hope this  humble post enlightens our darkened minds  about our good, holy, faithful and trusted angelic ally soldiers and commanders, particularly the powerful St Michael the archangel. God  and St.Michael the Archangel—His faithful servant— protect and bless us all always!)

1. Biblical Foundation of Angelic Intercession

Angels are God’s messengers and helpers.

Scripture shows angels are active in salvation history:

Gabriel delivers God’s message to Mary (Luke 1:26–28).

MAn angel strengthens Jesus in Gethsemane (Luke 22:43).

Angels carry prayers to God (Revelation 8:3–4).

➡️ If angels present prayers to God, asking St. Michael to intercede is not worship — it’s cooperation with God’s heavenly design.

2.Michael as Defender Against Satan

Michael is explicitly shown as the “heavenly warrior’

Revelation 12:7–9— “Michael and his angels fought against the dragon… and the great dragon was cast down.”

*Daniel 10:13, 21; 12:1— Michael is called the “great prince” and protector of God’s people.

➡️ Asking for his protection in prayer is biblically consistent: he’s already fighting for us by God’s command.

 3. Prayer vs. Worship

Worship (latria) is due to God alone.

‼️Prayer in the Catholic sense means *asking* (from Latin *precari* = to beg, request).

👆We “pray” to saints/angels the same way we ask fellow believers to pray for us (James 5:16).

➡️ Praying to St. Michael ≠ worship. It’s asking him, as God’s appointed defender, to intercede in the spiritual battle.

4. Early Church & Tradition*

Pope Leo XIII (1886) composed the famous “Prayer to St. Michael” after a vision of Satan’s attack on the Church.

* The prayer is fully theocentric: “defend us in battle, be our protection… cast into hell Satan and all evil spirits…” — but it appeals to St. Michael as God’s appointed warrior.

Early Christians also invoked angels in liturgy (see ancient Eastern prayers and writings of St. Basil).

 5. Miracles & Devotion

* Countless testimonies exist of St. Michael’s protection — from the apparition at Monte Gargano (5th century) to modern stories of deliverance.

* Consecrating oneself to God’s angels has always been about *deeper reliance on God’s power through His messengers*.

Summary:

“Why do Catholics pray to St. Michael the Archangel? Isn’t prayer only for God? The Bible itself shows angels interceding, protecting, and delivering God’s people (Daniel 12:1, Revelation 12:7). St. Michael, God’s appointed defender, fights Satan and the powers of darkness. When Catholics pray to him, we’re not worshiping him — we’re asking for his intercession, just as the early Church and saints did. Discover the undeniable biblical, historical, and spiritual reasons why devotion to St. Michael is essential in today’s spiritual warfare.”

SHORT POWERFUL PRAYERS TO ST.MICHAEL

St. Michael the Archangel, with your light,

            R: Enlighten us.

            L: With your wings,

            R: Protect us.

            L: With your sword,

            R: Defend us.

           All:     AMEN!

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
